Commissioned by City of Phoenix, Arts and Culture

“Mariposa te Quiero” is a 21.5’ high by 20’ diameter sculpture located in the Butterfly Garden at Laveen Heritage Park in Phoenix, AZ. Made of stainless steel and colorful translucent polycarbonate, the sculpture is dimly illuminated with LED lighting at night.

Inspired by pollination, the work reflects the mutual relationship between flower and butterfly. The vivid colors and form echo the visual cues plants use to attract butterflies, such as color, shape, and scent. Butterfly-pollinated plants are often bright red, orange, or purple, and marked with nectar guides that signal their offerings. The flower needs the butterfly as much as the butterfly needs the flower. This sculpture is calling out to the butterfly, enticing it, attracting it: “Mariposa te Quiero.”
