DAY 4 - “Bayou Ballad” Continues at IAH Airport

Progress continues on "Bayou Ballad," the large-scale hand-glazed, hand-cut ceramic and glass mosaic installation by artist Dixie Friend Gay, commissioned by United Airlines and Intercontinental Airport, and fabricated and installed in collaboration with Mosaika Art & Design. Located in the baggage claim of the new Terminal B at Intercontinental Airport, the installation is steadily transforming the space into an immersive celebration of the Houston ecosystem.

Today, the team continued installing the southwest wall, revealing even more of the vibrant landscape and the infamous Great Blue Heron!

Visitors from across the construction site stopped by throughout the day to watch the artwork take shape, making it exciting to share the progress with so many people.

The mosaic-clad columns are quickly becoming a favorite feature of the installation. Their hand-formed, hand-glazed ceramic elements create a richly textured surface that invites travelers to discover new details as they move through the space.

The winding passionflower vines were inspired by photographs taken in Dixie’s native Houston wildlife garden. The Mosaika team has done a beautiful job translating them into mosaic.

And finally, an important update from the job site: Mike received a new safety vest with a pocket (Thanks, Jordan!) and was more than happy to model it for the blog. We'd say it looks pretty good on him.

We're looking forward to another productive day tomorrow as Bayou Ballad continues to come to life, one tile at a time.
